My Sept 11, 2001
I guess everyone will remember where they were on Sept 11. My husband and I were in a hotel room in Chicago. We were suppose to be home in New York. On Sept 10 we boarded our flight in San Antonio Texas 130 in the afternoon We had just seen my stepson graduated from boot camp at Lackland AirForce Base. The first plane we boarded they were unable to fuel, so we had to disembark and board a second plane. When that plane started to take off down the runway it abruptly came to a stand still..something about cabin pressure..finally we were on our third plane. but it wasnt going to make our connecting flight due to the weather in Newark New Jersey. So we were told we were going to Chicago. It took forever for them to find our luggage but finally at 1 A,M. we were at the hotel. Dead tired we went to bed ..Our morning flight was early out of Ohare Airport. I had gotten up to shower when my husband frantically called for me..I saw him sitting on the bed watching the tv..he looked at me and said. “we are not going anywhere.. I called my aunt in Long Island. My cousin had an office in the world trade center..she said he was ok..the impact that the attacks had on us were nothing compared to those who lost loved ones however, here we were, stuck in chicago, unable to secure a flight home, money running out, the car rental place wanted $500.00 to rent a car. We were unable to have funds transferred to us as lines were down..the days just seemed endless. and we felt helpless. on Thursday we were finally able to secure a flight out of Ohare. we were told we were the first flight. as we left the hotel the person behind the desk told us she would hold our room just in case we had to come back. we were the only people on the shuttle going to the airport..there was a gloom that just hung in the air. the flight we were taking was flying into Westchester airport..of course our car was at the Albany airport. Needless to say we didn’t care. We boarded the flight. Silence was all around us. The pilot made an announcement that no one was to be wandering the plane. This included the flight attendants. the only reason to get up would be to use the rest room. The flight took off . The silence on the plane was deafing..About mid flight a gentleman i would say in his mid 40′s got up from his seat . He was clearly of middle eastern decent. I felt bad for him as he knew that as he walked back to the rest room all eyes were on him. You could tell he was nervous. From that point on i truly knew that things would never be the same for anyone ..When our flight finally landed we all cheered and clapped..There were some tears and hugs. There was a person from a news program on board interviewing people as they got off the plane. she asked me how the attacks affected me. I told her i was only meanly inconvenienced. The real ones effected were the families of those who were missing or were killed..We got home and the next day we drove to Albany to get our car. All i remember after that is just crying. Watching tv and crying. The chills and disbelief still remain and alway will..
